I’ve been experimenting with ways to increase my Instagram post reach without paying for ads. This is called “organic” reach and can be a challenge to conquer!
Organic reach defined: Organic reach is how many people see your post. What affects this, is how many followers you have, how often you post, what hashtags you use and how well your post performs from your followers.
Not all of these factors have equal weight, but the “weight” of these factors (often referred to as “algorithms”) used by Instagram and Facebook are TOP SECRET. However, there are a lot of companies out there that spend a lot of time investigating how posts perform. They then publish the findings for the rest of us average peeps to learn from.
For 2019, the best way to get the most organic reach is to post regularly, at least daily and in most cases more than that. Use video and stories and of course, the best hashtags.
I haven’t been doing much video lately, and I have been playing around with stories a bit.
But the one thing I discovered that worked the best for organic reach by 60% was this:
By tagging someone famous in my post, an author of a book. @MichaelHyatt
Overall, my post reach has been slowly increasing with daily posts and using hashtags. But in the past month, I created two posts where I quoted an author; Michael Hyatt, and tagged him in the post. @MichaelHyatt
Both of these posts saw a 60% increase in organic reach, and I had likes and comments from people who haven’t seen my posts before.
Pretty cool huh?
So how can you make this work for you?
Firstly, I don’t suggest tagging famous people in every single post. Overdoing it will not end up well.
Like with most things in life, balance is key.
While I’m still experimenting with this strategy, I would suggest making at least one post per week where you tag (use the @ sign) a brand or someone famous that you talk about in your post. For me, I find tagging authors and other thought leaders to be the easiest, since they inspire me and I’m often quoting them in my posts!
Give it a try this week. Create a quote post and in the caption, tag the author or famous person/brand and see if your organic reach increases along with your likes and comments.
For Instagram, you can pop into your “insights” tab on your phone and see how each post performs. Here’s a short tutorial on how to do this on your phone.
